The University of Wollongong Global Communicators Program (GCP) is a community of domestic students committed to being global citizens. Established in 2012, the program has transformed since its early days, developing into a model of English conversation groups for international students.

The sessions run between weeks two and 12 each session, and are carried out in a friendly, non-intimidating environment to encourage active participation. The 2015 Autumn session has drawn the program’s highest numbers, but there is room to grow and improve.

The classes focus on aspects of ‘Social English’ rather than following any structure, a point that distinguishes it from its language class counterpart. It focuses on creating long-lasting friendships to assist transitioning international students into Australian and UOW culture.

Sharon Twyford runs the Global Communicators Program, Here she discusses its success this semester, and future plans.
