Wollongong’s $19.4 million Crown Street Mall refurbishment is one step closer to completion, with the removal of the outdated   ‘birdcage’ this week.

The upper part of the Mall now boasts a more spacious and modern feel, surprising shop goers in yesterday’s wet weather.

Efforts to upgrade the 30-year-old mall are part of Council efforts to revitalise the Wollongong City Centre.

Wollongong City Council will also work with Sydney Water to replace the 80-year-old water pipes running below the precinct. The  works are expected to take five weeks.

The removal of the existing infrastructure will make way for crucial construction work later in the year.
