The Wollongong NRE Hawks are back for another term of the IMB School Hoops program. The initiative is one of the key community activities undertaken by the Hawks.

Assistant Coach and Community Development Officer for the NRE Hawks Matt Flinn, believes that the program is fundamental to the clubs involvement with school communities. “We are now embedded in school programs,” Mr Flinn said

The basketball program is one of the most popular school based activities throughout the Illawarra, with children given the chance to meet their favourite basketball players.

Players and coaching staff from the NRE Hawks have taken the program to over 10,000 local school children in the few years that the initiative has been running.

The program involves a one-hour clinic in which skills including ball handling, shooting and passing are taught to children. Activities are designed to be fun, safe and energetic. “It is about promoting health and fitness”, said Flinn.

For the schools taking part there is no cost incurred as the IMB fully funds the ‘School Hoops’ initiative. The program stretches down to Jervis Bay and across the Southern Highlands.

Wollongong NRE Hawks are very much a community club.
