A proposal to ban smoking in the Wollongong CBD is gaining momentum after Wollongong City Councillors voted in favour of the motion.
Councillor George Takacs filed the motion to ban smoking in Crown Street Mall, which he says will lead to a better atmosphere in the city.
“If we can create an image of Wollongong as a city where residents are encouraged to lead healthy lifestyles then people will feel more motivated to do just that,” Cr Takacs said.
“Therefore, the obvious time to implement such a change would be when the mall refurbishment is complete. This will happen around the same time as the West Keira development in the CBD, adjacent to the mall, and these measures will add to that new vibe.”
